Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه is one the greatest companions, scholars, and luminaries of in Muslim history. His life offers great lessons for personal growth, family values, and community development.
Although he was young, his sincerity, love for knowledge, and close connection with the Prophet ﷺ allowed him to become one of the greatest scholars of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ recognized his potential and made dua for him, saying: “O Allah, give him understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation of the Qur’an.” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

1. A Deep Connection with Allah سبحانه وتعالى
He was known for having marks under his eyes from frequently weeping out of awe of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. Once a man traveled with him from Mecca to Medina, which is quite a distance, and noticed that every time they stopped, Ibn Abbas would pray and recite verses from Surah Qaf, and weep.
The true mark of knowledge—real knowledge— is how your heart is connected with Allah, especially in private. Knowledge should be reflected in worship and actions and Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه embodied this beautifully.
2. Adab and Companionship with the Prophet ﷺ
Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه closely observed the Prophet ﷺ and attended to his matters. Knowing that the Prophet ﷺ would need water for Wudu, he would happily prepare it in advance. He also joined the Prophet ﷺ in the night prayer. On one night, after the Prophet ﷺ began the night prayer, Ibn Abbas slightly retreated. When asked why, he replied "How can I stand next to you with you while you are the Prophet of God?" He expressed verbally what he demonstrated physically, that the rank of the Prophet ﷺ is supreme. Adab is the key to the door of knowledge and righteous action, and Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه definitely used that key appropriately.
3. Carrying the baton and trust of knowledge as it deserves
After the passing of the Prophet ﷺ, Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه sought knowledge and wisdom from the senior companions. A companion once discouraged him, saying, "Why would people need you when there are others they can ask?"
Despite this, Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه ignored the discouragement and continued to seek knowledge and learn from others. Years later, he became a trusted resource of knowledge. Now, he was the one answering people’s questions, and became one of the chief scholars of Tafsir and Islamic law, and a trusted counsel to Caliphs such as Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنهما.
4. Lofty Praise at Death
The same Ayahs mentioning death that would make Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه weep with heavy tears would eventually become his own reality.
When he passed رضي الله عنه it was said:
مات رباني هذه الأمة
“The devoted scholar of this Ummah has passed.”
He was also remembered with titles such as “the foremost scholar” and “the great exegete of the Qur'an.”These became staple biographical titles to describe one of the great exemplars in Muslim history.
